I welcome players, coaches, officials and supporters to the New South Wales Combined High Schools Sports Association Boys’ Softball Championships; this year returning to the Sydney South West region. This is the second year in a row that Sydney South West has hosted a NSWCHSSA Softball Championship, after the girls’ championships last year. This year Sydney South West will be defending the title, they won in Wagga Wagga, on their home diamonds.
The end of 2017 saw the NSW All Schools Team compete at the Pacific Schools Games in Adelaide. The team included seven NSWCHSSA athletes, and was captained by Mac Reith-Snare from Western region. The NSW boys’ team was undefeated throughout the competition. The final saw NSW beat Queensland 5-2, seeing them defend the title they won in 2016 in Victoria. The team came from behind to seal a memorable win, thrilling the large and extremely vocal crowd that came to watch. Harrison Pudner and Lachlan Spinelli were selected into the Australian Merit Team; Lachlan for the second time.
In 2018 a team, of twelve players, will be selected to represent NSWCHSSA at the NSW All Schools Trials at Blacktown. Competing against a team from the Catholic schools and a team from the Independent schools, a NSW team will be chosen to compete in the School Sports Australia tournament being held in Cairns in May.
In reflecting on the experience of attending the Pacific Schools Games one thing stands out: smiles on faces. For me that is the goal of being involved in softball. To see the enjoyment of playing the game, meeting personal goals, and achieving success is the ultimate reward. At the end of the day this is a game we love to play and I encourage everyone to finish each day with a smile on your face.
Our sincere thanks go to Macarthur District Softball Association for their continued support of NSWCHSSA Softball. We acknowledge the contribution of George Norrish in coordinating umpires at this event.
In closing I would like to thank the Sydney South West Association for hosting these Championships. To Anthony Murphy (Sydney South West Sports Coordination Officer), Lianne Essex (Sydney South West Sports Coordination Support Officer), Ian Gilmore and John Heeney (Championship Managers), thank you for your support, time and tireless effort. It has been greatly appreciated. Finally, I would like to thank the NSW Teacher’s Mutual Bank for its continued financial support of Girls’ and Boys’ Softball
