Resistance Training for Teens

news_feb18_rtft1

As students transition from adolescence to adulthood, unstructured and non-competitive physical activities, otherwise known as ‘lifelong’ physical activities, become increasingly important for maintaining an active lifestyle.

Despite common misconceptions, supervised and properly conducted resistance training is a safe and healthy activity for school students, and evidence clearly shows it can help students improve strength, manage weight, enhance sports performance, build self-esteem, and reduce the risk of sports-related injuries. In particular it is very effective in motivating less engaged students to be more active. Yet, few schools offer resistance training within their Physical Education or School Sport programs.

The NSW Department of Education School Sport Unit recently partnered with researchers from the University of Newcastle to design and implement a school-based program known as Resistance Training for Teens. The Resistance Training for Teens program is typically offered to stage 4 and 5 students in NSW public schools as a school sport option and can be delivered by trained teachers from any subject area (not just the ‘sporty’ ones).

The Resistance Training for Teens program incorporates accredited teacher professional learning, physical activity resources, and a purpose-built smartphone application to support teachers to deliver foundational resistance training and other health and fitness activities (e.g., boxing fitness, yoga etc) in their schools.

Ideally Resistance Training for Teens could be offered as a 7-10 week program - an ideal sport option for stage 4 and 5 students!
