The aim of the Premier’s Sporting Challenge is to promote the benefits of physical activity and to get more students and staff more active, more often. To build excitement and to emphasise the importance of being active, start the 10 week Challenge with a launch party!
The NSW School Sports Unit has created a highly engaging launch video to motivate, educate and inspire students to work together on the 10wC.
- Whole school approach – present the 15 minute launch video in the school hall for all students to view or in each classroom commencing at the same time. Please note, each student will need to be at arms length apart in order to participate safely.
- Whole day launch – present the launch video to students and follow this up with activities during the day that will contribute to their physical activity minutes. The NSW School Sports Unit website has a variety of activities you can do including Fast Starts and games you can incorporate in the classroom and/or outdoors. You can also utilise the Sport Australia Play for Life Activity Cards to create your own sports gala day or afternoon of activities. Student ambassadors could help lead the activities for younger students.
Student Ambassadors are appointed during registration on the PSC Tracker and are a great way to promote autonomy and increase engagement of physical activity. Duties for PSC Student Ambassadors can include:
- assisting the PSC Facilitator/teacher with inputting physical activity minutes into the PSC Tracker
- leading activities at the launch day and/or running lunch time sporting competitions
- creating posters and flyers to promote the 10wC.
In Term 2, the school will receive it's PSC starter kit. If selected during registration, the pack will include beautifully designed, gloss printed student logbooks. Facilitators should demonstrate how students can add minutes in their logbooks and assist them with their data entry each day/week. Use of logbooks will require activity minutes to be entered into the e-Wall chart in the PSC Tracker during the challenge by the teacher, facilitator or student ambassador.
Alternatively, students can use the 10wC Activity Tracker web app (years 3-12 only). The app's greatest benefit is that activity data entered by students is transferred automatically into the class e-Wall chart.
As the logbook and tracker measure in 20 minute increments, it is recommended that time be set aside in the day 2-3 times a week or on a weekly basis for students to track their progress.
Award Level | Daily Activity Time |
---|---|
Bronze | 30 minutes per day |
Silver | 45 minutes per day |
Gold | 60 minutes per day |
Diamond | 80 minutes per day |
Year Level | Activity Record | Data Entry (PSC Tracker) | Award |
---|---|---|---|
K-2 | K-2 logbook (PDF, not sent to schools) | School e-Wall chart | Gold award for all K-2 participants* |
3-6 and 7-12 | Logbook or 10wC activity tracker web app | School e-Wall chart | Class award or individual award |
Specialist support class | SSP logbook | School e-Wall chart | Bronze class award or individual result can be allocated |
Staff | Staff logbook or 10wC activity tracker web app | Staff e-Wall chart | Individual award |
*Note: K-2 participate in a non-competitive 10 week Challenge and work towards a Gold award level. The role of the Facilitator/teacher is to encourage enthusiastic participation and engagement in physical activity, with the goal of fostering positive attitudes towards sport and physical activity. K-2 logbooks are available online only for download and print by the school.
Although any physical activity can contribute to student award minutes, the aim of the 10wC is to increase student activity, especially moderate to vigorous ‘huff and puff’ activities.
- Have a plan to incorporate at least one activity a day that goes toward physical activity minutes. This might be a ‘morning spark’ activity, you can get students to choose a ‘Fast Start’ activity.
- Utilise a variety of activities to keep students engaged. Sport Australia have a selection of great games and activities through their free Play for Life program.
- Access our thinking while moving resources to embed moving across the curriculum.
- Each morning, ask students if they did anything after school to contribute toward their physical activity minutes and promote at the end of the day.
- Use the GetActive@Home resources to set physically active homework for students.
There are many benefits for physical activity including increased time on task, engagement in learning and academic achievement. Being active does not mean it’s a break from learning, but a continuation or enhancement of learning. Physical activity can be incorporated into an KLA and the benefits of doing so are well established.
The School Sport Unit has a range of resources available called ‘Thinking while moving’ to support teachers embed PA across the school day.
Providing regular acknowledgment and recognition to students will help keep motivation high throughout the 10 weeks. Ways you could facilitate this;
- weekly acknowledgement at morning assemblies highlighting individual and class achievements
- presenting mid-challenge Achievement and Encouragement certificates (see below)
- celebrate student effort through a special ceremony when handing out award certificate at the end of the 10 weeks.
Remember to acknowledge student improvement and participation, not just those who are achieving high levels of activity tracking.

Important dates
- Final award submissions - TBC
- Late award submissions - TBC
10wC final awards are submitted in the PSC Tracker. This task can be performed by:
- Facilitators and Principals via the registration summary - 'Submit final awards' button or 'School e-Wall chart'
- coordinating classroom teachers via the 'School e-Wall chart'.
Submitting final awards depends on how activity is tracked
- e-Wall charts - If you have tracked and entered activity weekly in the e-Wall chart, this will generate a final award for each student based on the average of their 10 weeks of awards. If you have an incomplete e-Wall chart of student activity, this will generate an incorrect (lower) final award for your students. You can choose to complete the e-Wall chart OR estimate the final award level for each student based on their activity tracking – e.g. logbook.
- 10wC activity tracker web app - The app will automatically transfer the awards for each week and the final awards to the class e-Wall chart. If students have not tracked consistently, you can edit these final awards in the PSC Tracker as necessary.
- Other means - If you have been tracking the 10wC by other means, you may enter the final 10wC awards for each of your students (you do NOT need to complete the e-Wall chart).
Please note: all staff and student participants must have an award level beside their name. “No award” results against a participant will mean your submission is incomplete and grant funding requirements are not met. If a staff member / student did not participate in the challenge fully, please give them a bronze award as this is based on the 150 mandatory minutes per week in sport and physical activity requirements.
Two ways to submit awards:
- Individual awards - students will receive an award based on their individual achievements.
- Team/class awards – all students will receive the average award based on the class’s overall achievement in the e-Wall Chart, or as decided by the teacher.
For assistance see the 'Submitting final awards guide' (PDF 0.97MB)
10wC End-of-Challenge (EoC) certificates
During the final award submission process, you will be required to opt in or out of certificate print.
Please ensure you check the spelling of each student's name as this will appear exactly as it’s spelt in the Tracker on the printed certificates.
As part of the grant funding requirements, we ask that 10wC registered schools submit all class results, even if they are not getting printed certificates.
Need a certificate reprinted?
Email the PSC team to request a certificate to be reprinted or use the 2022 PSC 10wC EoC participant certificates (PDF 183KB) to print your own (Note: these do not have the Premier's signature for security reasons).
